SAP IS-U staffing and consultants
SAP IS-U (Industry Solution for Utilities) is SAP's utility customer information and billing system, covering device management, meter reading, billing and invoicing, and FI-CA contract accounts receivable and payable. Mako Professionals recruits senior SAP IS-U functional consultants, ABAP developers, conversion specialists and project managers on contract, contract-to-hire and full-time engagements.
Utility-experienced SAP talent for implementations, upgrades, conversions, S/4HANA Utilities migrations and ongoing production support.

What SAP IS-U covers
IS-U is not a single module: it is a set of tightly coupled component areas, each with its own specialist skill set.
IS-U runs the utility revenue cycle inside the SAP stack. Technical master data (connection object, premise, installation, device) describes the physical service; contract and contract account data describes the commercial relationship. Meter readings flow into billing, billing documents flow into invoicing, and invoicing posts receivables into FI-CA. Because those postings land in the same system as the general ledger, financial reconciliation is comparatively direct, but it also means a billing configuration error is immediately an accounting problem.
Utilities running IS-U are usually also running broader SAP landscapes, so IS-U work is rarely isolated from FI/CO, BW and integration teams. For the wider utility platform picture, including the Oracle Utilities products, see our Utility ERP & CIS practice.
Device management
The technical master data side of IS-U: device categories, installation and removal, device modification, and the meter reading process. Meter reading orders are created on cycle, results are captured or imported and validated, and implausible reads are corrected before they reach billing.

Billing & invoicing
IS-U deliberately separates billing from invoicing. Billing calculates consumption-based charges using rate categories, rates, operands and prices against the installation's billing master data; invoicing then aggregates billing documents, applies taxes and posts the receivable to FI-CA.

FI-CA: contract accounts receivable and payable
The high-volume subledger for utility receivables: contract accounts, payment lots and clearing, dunning and collections strategies, installment plans, security deposits, interest calculation and write-offs, with summarized postings to the general ledger.

EDM: energy data management
Handles interval and profile data rather than simple register reads: profile allocation, synthetic and analytical profiles, settlement-relevant data and formula-based derivation. EDM is where AMI-driven interval consumption is validated and prepared for billing.

Integration: CRM / C4U and ERP finance
IS-U rarely stands alone. Customer interaction typically runs through SAP CRM for Utilities or Customer Experience for Utilities (C4U), while receivables, taxes and revenue postings flow into ERP finance. Integration design decides how much of the customer process is replicated in two systems.

The S/4HANA Utilities migration path
What changes, why utilities are planning it now, and the roles the work demands.
What changes. S/4HANA Utilities carries the IS-U functional heritage forward onto the S/4HANA platform: HANA as the database, simplified data structures and aggregate removal, Fiori-based user experience in place of much of the classic GUI, and revised finance integration. Custom ABAP has to be assessed for compatibility, classic transactions and reports may have Fiori successors or none at all, and the convergence of customer engagement into SAP's newer Customer Experience for Utilities layer often reopens design decisions that were settled years ago in CRM.
Why now. Maintenance timelines for the ECC generation, accumulated custom code that nobody wants to carry twice, and the practical difficulty of supporting AMI-scale interval data on older architecture all push utilities to plan the move rather than defer it. Many organizations start with a readiness assessment and custom code remediation long before a conversion date is set.
Roles it demands. Conversions need an architect who understands both IS-U functionality and S/4HANA simplification, FI-CA and billing consultants to re-validate configuration, IS-U ABAP developers for custom code remediation, conversion and data migration leads, and a test lead who can build the regression coverage a billing system requires. Utilities weighing SAP against the Oracle stack often read our SAP IS-U vs Oracle CC&B comparison first.

SAP IS-U staffing questions
What is SAP IS-U?
SAP IS-U (Industry Solution for Utilities) is SAP's customer information and billing solution for utilities, running inside the SAP ERP stack. It covers device management, meter reading, billing and invoicing, energy data management and contract accounts receivable and payable (FI-CA). Because it sits on the same platform as SAP finance and master data, the utility's revenue cycle and general ledger share one system of record.
What is FI-CA and why does it matter on utility projects?
FI-CA is Contract Accounts Receivable and Payable, the subledger SAP uses for high-volume receivables such as utility customer accounts. It handles payment processing, clearing, dunning and collections, installment plans, security deposits and write-offs, then posts summarized entries to the general ledger. Most billing defects and revenue reconciliation issues on IS-U programs surface in FI-CA, so a dedicated FI-CA consultant is usually a non-negotiable role.
Do you staff S/4HANA Utilities migrations?
Yes. We recruit for S/4HANA Utilities architects, functional consultants, IS-U ABAP developers, conversion and data migration leads, test leads and program managers for system conversions and new implementations. Engagements are available on contract, contract-to-hire or full-time.
What is the difference between SAP IS-U and Oracle CC&B?
IS-U is a component of the SAP ERP stack and inherits its finance and master data foundation, extended through ABAP. Oracle CC&B is a purpose-built utility application on the Oracle Utilities Application Framework, extended through OUAF configuration and scripting. Both run meter-to-cash; the differences are architecture, ecosystem and talent pool. We compare them in detail on our SAP IS-U vs Oracle CC&B page.
How does Mako approach SAP IS-U recruiting?
We begin with the role requirements, project context and current consultant availability. Our internal recruitment team uses role-specific questions to evaluate relevant SAP IS-U experience and responsibilities before deciding whom to present, then discusses a realistic timeline with the client.
